Dr. Gesche Krause

Senior Fellow

Gesche Krause is a social scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Germany. She was trained at the Universities of Kiel and Greifswald (Germany) and completed her PhD at Stockholm University (Sweden). She worked with several international research institutions in the UK, USA, Brazil, Indonesia and New Zealand, and private sector companies in Germany before affiliating with the AWI in 2013 where she is responsible for AWIs contributions to the Earth System Knowledge Platform (ESKP), while researching on the evaluation of impact of science to societal processes. In 2011, she founded the International Commission of the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) expert working group on social and economic dimensions of aquaculture (WGSEDA). In 2013, on behalf of the WBGU (German Advisory Council on Global Change), she contributed to "World in Transition: Governing the Marine Heritage" report. In 2016 she became executive board member of the international Oceans Past Initiative (OPI). In 2017 she was part of the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) via SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) for the topic "Food from the Oceans".
